The MORU Tropical Health Network conducts targeted clinical and public health research to discover and develop appropriate, practical, affordable interventions that improve people’s health in resource-limited parts of the world. Since 1979, MORU has worked on reducing the burden of infectious disease and improving maternal and child health in poor, mainly rural populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Thailand Wellcome Africa and Asia Programme employs 940 scientists, clinicians, healthcare workers and support staff in a closely integrated network of research units and collaborative clinical study sites in Asia and Africa.
MORU envisions a world where the health and well-being of disadvantaged populations in LMICs are significantly improved. Over the next decade, they aim to conduct impactful clinical and public health research to develop accessible and effective interventions.
IMI has been contracted to support MORU with the research programme and public engagement aspects of its Wellcome Core grant application. The Wellcome programme aims to fund discovery research pertaining to three major health challenges: the effects of mental health issues, escalating infectious diseases, and climate change. IMI’s work involves theory of change development, development of impact case studies, and grant writing support.
