Gender equality in Science, Technology & Innovation (STI) and Open Science (OS) should not remain a ‘good intention’ but should become a reality.
Current literature reveals an absence of women in leading roles in STI, OS and Citizen Science processes and projects, calling for a need to encourage more women to become science and climate ambassadors.
The FEMLEAD project (Fostering fEMale participation and LEADership in open science
initiatives) aims to foster female participation and leadership in OS initiatives within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). By building collaborative networks, the project seeks to exchange best practices from gender-balanced policies, empowering women to lead and present initiatives that incorporate intersectional perspectives. FEMLEAD will provide clear guidance for integrating gender into research practices, promoting a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach that strengthens the science-policy-society nexus for more equitable, transparent and accountable research.
Through FEMLEAD, women will be encouraged to conduct research projects and be given the chance to present the results of their studies at community meetings. This will be done through creating inclusive project designs that consider the specific constraints and needs of women (e.g. flexible timing, remote participation options, addressing caring responsibilities etc.). FEMLEAD will offer training and skill building opportunities to enhance women’s confidence and scientific expertise (particularly in the climate change sector).
