Senior Researcher

Professor Reed is a transdisciplinary researcher specialising in environmental governance and research impact. His work focuses on the sustainability and resilience of peatlands and agri-food systems, and on improving how researchers generate, share and apply knowledge to produce societal benefit.

Reed is Professor of Rural Entrepreneurship at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), where he directs the Natural Capital Challenge Centre. He is Senior Researcher at the Institute for Methods Innovation and Senior Trainer with Fast Track Impact. He serves as Research Lead for the IUCN UK Peatland Programme, sits on the Executive Board of the Peatland Code, and co-chairs the Research Working Group of UNEP’s Global Peatland Initiative.

Expertise and experience

Professor Reed has led major programmes on peatland management, sustainable land use, agri-environment policy and research impact. His roles span participatory research and evaluation, theory of change, impact planning, stakeholder analysis, and applied social science methods. He has contributed to international assessment processes and technical reviews, including for UNEP, UNCCD, IPBES and the UK National Ecosystem Assessment.

Funding

Since 2005, Professor Reed has led projects as Principal Investigator worth more than £4.5 million, including large-scale programmes on peatland resilience, agri-food systems and ecosystem services. He has contributed as Co-Investigator or Work Package Lead to more than 40 additional projects with a combined value of about £50 million.

Training and capacity building

Professor Reed provides training on research impact, engagement and evidence-informed practice through Fast Track Impact and IMI. Since 2015, he has contributed to programmes that have trained more than 8,000 researchers from more than 200 organisations in 52 countries.

Publications

Professor Reed has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, five books and over 100 book chapters and reports. More than half of his publications are among the top 10 per cent most cited worldwide, and he appears on Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list.
